Folk Dancing Group "Šumadija"

The initial activities on organizing folk dancing group in east GTA and Durham Region started in September 1992, thanks to the efforts of Ms. Ranka Matejić and some other parents from Oshawa and surrounding  areas. The parents were supported by the experienced choreographer, Mile Ocokoljić

FOLK

The beginning was difficult since many children did not speak Serbian language and the choreographer himself was not fluent in English. After a few practices held in Greek church, the group “United Serbs” moved to Waverly PS in Oshawa. Since 1993 the folk dance group has practiced regularly in St.Arsenije Sremac Church in Whitby. As the group grew larger, its name c changed to “Sumadija” in 1994.

In 1995 there were about 40 children attending Friday practices regularly. Those young people supported by their parents Attended many concerts throughout Ontario, Quebec and the United States of America.

Thanks to the continuous enthusiasm and dedication of the choreographer Mile Ocokoljic and some parents, such as Branislava Radulovic, the folk dance group Sumadija keeps experiencing success, becoming one of the most distinguished groups of that kind in Serbian community Canada.

The young dancers kept attending the Orthodox religious school as well as Serbian language school.

Folk Dance Group “Šumadija” invites all interested children older than 4 to join us in learning the first steps of Serbian dances and tradition through the fun interaction with your peers.

Our practices take place every Friday, starting at 7 o’clock.

We welcome new members throughout the school year.
